The ancient letter we know as the Gospel According to Mark was written to people who were in a desperate search for meaning, belonging, and hope. Above all, what the hearers of Mark's gospel needed was some word, some principle that could give them the power to continue living as disciples of Jesus Christ in a confusing, often hostile world. But instead of dry philosophy or an exhausting catalog of rules, the writer of Mark gave his hearers a Person. He showed them Jesus Christ, knowing that nothing imparts more power than the example and living spirit of the risen Lord.

As Dr. Thomas Olbricht demonstrates, our world today - and each of us - has the same need. We long for acceptance, for purpose, for direction in a world that shouts contradictory messages at us every day. We need power to be the persons God intends for us to be. By turning again to Jesus, we can become persons of authenticity, determination, and faith. Jesus Christ can give us the Power to Be.
